Note by L.B.Kamenev

To Lenin and Trotsky. Private

I am outraged to the depths of my soul by Lunacharsky's letter1. No one has ever accused1*me of scheming in all confrontations. Lunacharsky does it for the second time - behind my back, maintaining the best relations. Hey, hey, this is intolerable. I shall now be merciless with him. It's dirty around him2.

L.Kamenev.

Lenin's note

There is not a shadow of an accusation of scheming on his part. There is a withdrawal. We must not allow the question of recusal to be "expanded".

1Lunacharsky's letter criticizing L.B.Kamenev was caused by the decision of the Moscow Council (Chairman Kamenev) to close a number of theaters in connection with the fuel crisis (see: V.I.Lenin. Biographical Chronicle. Vol. 8, p. 181). In this case, the Moscow Soviet acted on the basis of the Sovnarkom's resolution of November 17, 1919 on heating of educational institutions, theaters, museums and libraries in Moscow (see: Decrees of Soviet Power. Vol. VI. M., 1977, pp. 264-265).

2In the note, L.B. Kamenev writes that A.V. Lunacharsky accuses him of intrigue for the second time. Apparently, Kamenev is referring to his conflict with Lunacharsky when, according to Kamenev, Lunacharsky alluded "to some personal considerations guiding the Moscow Soviet in carrying out the decisions of the 7th Congress [of Soviets] on the delimitation of the terms of reference of local and central authorities" (RCCHIDNI, f. 17, op. 112, d. 6, l. 32). The issue was considered in the Orgbureau of the Central Committee of the RCP(b) on July 2, 1919, Lunacharsky was asked to carry out a complete unification of the administration of the theater business and to stop friction on these issues between individual representatives of Soviet power (see ibid., l. 31).

This conflict ended with the approval by the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR on August 26, 1919, of the decree on the unification of the theater business (see: Decrees of Soviet Power. Vol. VI. M., 1977, pp. 69-73).
