The materials in this collection, covering the years 1917–1922, in their content largely echo the tasks of defending our socialist fatherland during the days of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people against the German fascist invaders. The study of these documents will arm our cadres with Bolshevik experience and the art of organizing victory over the enemy.

The materials in the collection are arranged in chronological order. Minor deviations from the chronological principle have been allowed only in a few cases, in order to preserve the organic connection between individual documents.

For each document included in the collection, if it is not a Lenin manuscript, an archival note on the character of the original document is given at the end.

This collection has been prepared for publication by I. A. Gladkov and N. A. Podvoiskaya.

The collection is published under the editorship of M. B. Mitin and A. D. Makarov, Institute of Marx–Engels–Lenin under the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).

RESOLUTION ON THE ORDER OF THE COMMANDER OF THE SOUTH-WESTERN FRONT**
19 November (2 December) 1917

Transmit by radio to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief for the taking of measures (and for verification of what trust Volodchenko deserves) and for the same purpose inform the War Department.

* Lenin's order is written on the reverse of a directive of the Military-Revolutionary Committee. The directive ordered the detachment to disarm the cadets of the Mikhailovsky Artillery School in Petrograd and to use the guns taken from the cadets against the troops of Krasnov–Kerensky.
** In his order, the commander of the South-Western Front, General Volodchenko, warned the troops of the front against the treachery of the Germans, who were attempting to use fraternization with the Russian troops for the purposes of reconnaissance and espionage. The order pointed out that fraternization "is being conducted by the enemy according to a strictly defined system. While on some sectors fraternization is not permitted by him at all, despite even attempts on our side to initiate it (there was a case when two officers, including the division commander, came out of the German trenches and declared that until a formal armistice was concluded they would not permit fraternization)."
