TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE REVOLUTIONARY MILITARY COUNCIL OF THE REPUBLIC
22 May 1919
From the reports of the Revolutionary Military Council of the 11th Army* it follows with certainty the absolute necessity of putting an end to the uprising immediately, for otherwise we are not even able to hold Astrakhan. Therefore, I insist once more that you must go a second time to Boguchar and see the matter through to the end, for the work is clearly not going well with Sokolnikov**.

* The Revolutionary Military Council of the 11th Army reported on the alarming situation in the Astrakhan area.
** Lenin's directive on the swiftest suppression of the White Guard uprising on the Don was thwarted by the criminal machinations of Trotsky and his agents, in particular Sokolnikov, who, as a member of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Southern Front, sabotaged the fulfilment of Lenin's instructions.

DIRECT-WIRE NOTE TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE REVOLUTIONARY MILITARY COUNCIL OF THE REPUBLIC
Southern Front
22 May 1919
We have just learned of the breakthrough of our front near Riga*. Riga is apparently lost. The treachery of the Latvian bourgeois officers is very likely. It is also possible that a general decisive offensive is being prepared on the entire Western Front. All this obliges us to redouble our attack on the Donbas and at all costs immediately liquidate the uprising on the Don. Together with Sklyansky, in addition to the thousand cadets sent yesterday, we shall send another thousand cadets there. I advise you to devote yourself entirely to the liquidation of the uprising.

*Lenin*
* On 22 May 1919 Riga was occupied by German troops under General Goltz, aided by bourgeois officers of the Riga garrison.
