[January 18, 1919]
What, in your opinion, is the essence of the opposition? 1
1 At the Moscow party conference, which opened on January 18, 1915, the opposition group led by E. N. Ignatov, Lisitsyn and some other workers of the Moscow Soviet demanded a "fundamental revision of the Soviet constitution", "the liquidation of the Council of People's Commissars" and a restriction of the leading role of the party in relation to the soviets, defending on the issue of relations between the center and the localities, the party and the soviets, views in the spirit of the Sapronov group of democratic centralism. (On Lenin's speech at the conference against the opposition, see Works, vol. XXIII, p. 472.) The resolution proposed by the opposition was rejected by the conference. The note to Yaroslavsky, chairman of the conference, was written by Lenin at the first meeting of the conference under the text of the copy of the resolutions of the Moscow Committee on the issues discussed at the conference, which he had in his hands.
