Is it true that you have arrested Archbishop Ropp of Mogilev¹ as a hostage? Please inform under what conditions he could be released, a matter for which the Pope has interceded. [197]

Lenin.

¹ Ropp, representative of the Polish Catholic Church in Petrograd, was arrested in early 1919 on charges of counterrevolutionary activities. He was released in February of the same year in exchange for a group of Communists imprisoned in Poland. The Communists slated for the exchange were treacherously killed by Polish border authorities while crossing the Polish frontier.

What is the status of the Finns releasing Maurice Leiteizen¹? Every possible effort must be made to secure his release. The Finns’ behavior is outrageous. Telegraph your reply.

Lenin.

¹ M. G. Leiteizen (son of G. D. Lindov-Leiteizen), working during this period in the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs, was arrested in Finland on suspicion of revolutionary propaganda.

I have just heard that the district soviet has evicted Vera Ivanovna Zasulich and other prominent revolutionaries from the House of Writers¹. This is utterly disgraceful! Can this really be true?

Lenin.
