1 In later documents: in the plan for the speech at the IV Extraordinary All-Russian Congress and in the speech at the congress, Lenin defines February 11 as the turning point in the development of the revolution. Apparently, Lenin, in specifying the date of the onset of the new period, came to the conclusion that the turning point was determined not by the moment when the Germans had already crossed over to the offensive (February 17), but by the moment when they began to prepare the offensive (February 11) after the breakdown of negotiations.

AT THE FACTION MEETING OF THE IV EXTRAORDINARY ALL-RUSSIAN
CONGRESS OF SOVIETS ON MARCH 13, 1918 *
Evening session.
Comrades! You all know, of course, that the conclusion of peace has provoked an incredible reaction within our party. The crisis will be overcome by our party without any split. Our party has won a majority among the proletariat and semi-proletariat. Our revolution is one of the links in the mounting world revolution. I think the disagreements, provoked by the ideological incongruity.... the feeling of indignation of any communist is legitimate: to stake everything, to repulse every act of violence. Objective conditions did not correspond. The main reasons... their deficiency, their mistake, was that they did not subject this most legitimate feeling to analysis. The turn in the development of the revolution as a whole necessitated the conclusion of peace. If we cast a glance back, we will see that the only possibility would have been if, from March 1917, everyone had come to the aid of Soviet power, if everyone had then shown more love for the poor, for the soldier, and had directed all efforts toward helping the front hold out, then it would have been possible — to save Russia from the present ordeal. Instead, we saw many months of conciliationism, they tolerated the offensive until July, they tore at, tormented, exhausted the soldier, the worker. Outgrowing conciliationism with the
