Remarkable is the invention by Thomas (1878) instead of the Bessemer method of iron production — the basic or Thomas Verfahren.
This method gave Germany an advantage, because it consists in freeing the ore from phosphorus, and in Germany the iron ore is just phosphorreicb (NB).
This is how Germany beat England.
The chemical industry manufactures coal tar (1 million tons in 1912 in Germany).
