[1916, Bern]

For A. M. Gorky.

Dear Alexei Maximovich, I am sending you by registered mail a pamphlet by my wife: "Popular Education and Democracy."

The author has been engaged in pedagogy for a long time, more than 20 years. The pamphlet contains both personal observations and materials on the new school in Europe and America. From the table of contents you will see that the first half also contains an outline of the history of democratic views. This too is very important, since the views of great democrats of the past are usually presented incorrectly or from an incorrect perspective. I do not know whether you yourself have the time to spare for reading and whether you are interested; sections 11 and 12 could serve as examples. The changes in the school of the newest, imperialist epoch are outlined on the basis of materials from recent years and provide very interesting illumination for democracy in Russia.

You would greatly oblige me if you would help—directly or indirectly—in the publication of this pamphlet. Demand for literature in this field has surely grown considerably in Russia now.

Best greetings and wishes.

V. Ulyanov.
