JULES GUESDE. "ON GUARD!"
Guesde (articles) ... "On Guard!"
... "One could almost say that the era of great European wars is now
closed; but there are other wars, which will arise and do arise every day, these are the wars for markets, for the
sale of goods... It is from this side that, far from disappearing, war threatens to be
permanent...
this is the capitalist war par excellence, the war for profit, between the
capitalists of all countries, fighting at the price of our gold and our blood for the world
market.
Well, can you imagine, in the capitalist government of each of the countries of
Europe, a socialist presiding over this kind of mutual slaughter for robbery!
Can you imagine an English Millerand, an Italian Millerand,
a German Millerand, adding to the French Millerand and drawing the proletarians against each other
into these capitalist brigandages? What would remain, I ask you, comrades, of the
international workers' solidarity?

The day the Millerand case became a general fact, one would have to say goodbye to all inter-
nationalism and become the n a t i o n a l i s t s that neither you nor I will ever consent to
be.

stenographic report.)

always complemented each other in our country where — for all parties — the victorious insurrection has
been only the continuation, the culmination of the ballot» (p. 90)....

And immediately following this phrase:
"The antagonism that one would like to establish — it is useless to seek why — between
the suffrage that begins and the coup de force that ends, has never existed except in the most
hollow of verbalities. History, all our history, is there to demonstrate that departures
from legality (author's italics) have always
and necessarily been preceded by the use, the employment of this legality as long as it
served as a defensive — and offensive — weapon for the new idea, for the new interests
in the process of recruitment and until the revolutionary situation
had arisen" (p. 90).
"But it is especially stupid to separate means (author's italics), to divide them into legal and illegal, peaceful and violent, in order to, recognizing some, reject others" (pp. 91-92).
(p. 92 the general strike is anti-revolutionary)
Ibid.
"Peace and Disarmament are only words, and cannot but be only words - for naive and clever people - in the present capitalist, class (author's italics) society" (p. 184. "Le Socialiste", 11 September 1898).
Article "Why".
