A. B. Hart: “The Monroe Doctrine”. Boston
1916.
Seems like a not uninteresting history of the foreign policy of the United States.
There is a bibliography.
p. 373: “anti-imperialists” defeated
1898.
303 — 4:
table (very instructive)
of the state development of America 1823 —
1915. (Growth of imperialism of the United
States, etc.).
314: “The most striking change in the life of nations is the creation of large associations. Consolidation occurs not only in banks, in enterprises and on railways, but also among the great powers.”
The next century will see five great powers:
Great Britain, Germany, Russia, China and the United States (!!)...
Growth of protectorate and “influence” (and Financial interests! 332). The United
States in Central America!— 332 —
NB:
“A definite policy of protectorates” (335).
359: Roland G. Usher. “Pan-Americanism.
A Prediction of the Inevitable Conflict between
the United States and the Victor
of Europe.” New York. 1915 (p. 419).
The author lambastes him, but himself defends the “doctrine”... of “protectorates” (369) for the “protection of American capital” (369)!!
Conclusion (402) for militarism!! (NB) (especially § 3) — especially (!!!) against Germany
and Japan (403). N B

Enrico Corradini. Il nazionalismo italiano*. Milan 1914. M. B. 1763*.
Written before the war. In the article “Nationalism and Socialism” (14. I. 1914) there are
interesting formulations of an imperialist of a small nation.
Fr[ance] and England = banks
NB
with c[apital] of 300 and 400 b[illions] (162 p.).
The plutocratic nations (Fr[ance], E[ngland], G[ermany]) sono pacificiste” (sic!)
(ha-ha!)
“sopratutto perché plutocratiche” (188), wh[ereas] the proletarian nations (Italy), fighting
with Turkey, fought against the plutocratic nations (sic!!
ha-ha!).
Imp[erialism] is a modern phenomenon, but it divides nations into plutocratic and prol[etarian]; “esso (nazionalismo) è il socialismo della nazione italiana nel mondo” (156).
This is the whole essence of this nasty little book:
other nations rob a lot. “Soc[ialism]” consists in ensuring that our small and
poor nation catches up or is catching up with those that rob a lot, so that it too may rob more!!
