article. A coherent, comprehensive article (with details, references to a participant or interlocutor) is of paramount importance.

In all conscience, one cannot abridge this article.

What is to be done?

If we are to speak frankly, one can seriously "relieve the burden" only by postponing your article; the reasons:

1) It was not written for this collection.

2) It is included in a book for which there is already a publishing contract; this means the chances of publication are serious. To print it a second time — that is a luxury, especially given our poverty.

3) The principal and fundamental matters on the history of the International have already been stated by you in your article in *Social-Democrat*.

4) The collection must necessarily be limited to (.) Russian materials + (.) urgent questions of the discussion, contentious, painful questions of the party.

5) And where and how does defeatism fit in?

Write openly, how you regard this proposal: from the point of view of practical editorial considerations (and which ones) or from the point of view of offense?
{In any case, we must continue our polemics and our correspondence.}

A collection of 160 pages, according to my plan, would provide rich, invaluable Russian material + a discussion on self-determination (without Yury*)
+ defeatism + Trotsky,
+ on the Inter- (Tskheize),
national, that is, everything that will not suffer postponement.

Cost around 2500 frs + 400 to Lyudmila (= also transport) + around 500 for transport =
ca.** 3400. We can still manage this, but no more.

I agree to issue no. of *Sbornik* (+ another 100-200 frs).

to Gertenstein (Switzerland)

Published for the first time, from the manuscript

* because I still have to write a reply to Yury 370 and send him more material yet!!
