The bourgeois newspapers of all the warring countries cited examples of fraternization between soldiers of the warring nations even in the trenches. And the issuance by military authorities (Germany, England) of draconian decrees against such fraternization proved that governments and the bourgeoisie attached serious significance to it. If, in the face of the complete dominance of opportunism in the upper ranks of the Social-Democratic parties of Western Europe and with the support of social-chauvinism by the entire Social-Democratic press, by all the authorities of the Second International, cases of fraternization were nonetheless possible, then this shows us how much it would have been possible to reduce the present criminal, reactionary, and slaveholding war and to organize a revolutionary internationalist movement if only the left socialists of all the warring countries had conducted systematic work in this direction.
