Dear Lydia Mikhailovna!

I am sending you the postcard I purchased for you, featuring a map of Bern and marked with the addresses you need to visit.

I strongly urge you to go to Bern: you absolutely must seek medical treatment—and only Kocher can cure you. I have conducted thorough inquiries of every kind, consulted medical literature (including the substantial work by Albert Kocher’s son on Basedow’s disease), and sought advice from physicians in Bern; I speak from personal experience.

In September, write a letter to Professor Kocher requesting a specific time for an appointment—and be sure to mention that you have only a certain amount of money available; otherwise, you may end up in an awkward bargaining situation with that rather shrewd Frau Professor. He will reply and schedule an appointment for you. Once you have that date, make your trip. Living in Bern is inexpensive. We will provide you with letters of introduction to Shklovsky and Shenderovich—they will be able to help you. In just a few months, you will go from being a disabled person to a fully recovered individual.

With warm regards and hoping to see you soon,

Yours, V. I.
