ON THE REVIEW OF R. B. PERRY'S BOOK "PRESENT PHILOSOPHICAL TENDENCIES"
*The Mind.* 1913. April. Review by F. G. S. Schiller of Ralph Barton Perry's *Present Philosophical Tendencies: a critical survey of Naturalism, Idealism, Pragmatism & Realism, together with a Synopsis of* the Philosophy of William James. London & New York (Longmans & Co). 1912. Pages 383*.
Schiller is against Perry's "realism" and accuses him of being so preoccupied with the metaphysical opposition of realism to idealism that he always tries to reduce all other problems to this one.
Note that Schiller quotes the following passage from Perry: "The organism corresponds to the environment from which it developed and on which it acts. Consciousness is a selective response to an environment that existed before it and exists independently of it. There must be something that elicits the response if there is any response at all" (p. 323 in Perry). And Schiller objects:
"If we do not take on faith the question of the 'independently existing environment'" (Schiller's emphasis), "then nothing is proven here except the relationship between thought and its 'environment'..." (p. 284).

ON THE REVIEW OF A. ALIOTTA'S BOOK "THE IDEALISTIC REACTION AGAINST SCIENCE"
Antonio Aliotta. *La reazione idealistica contro la scienza.* 1 volume. 8°. XVI + 526 p. Palermo. Casa editrice Optima. 1912**.
Review in *Revue Philosophique* (Ribot). Paris, 1912, No. 12, pp. 644-646, by J. Segond, who states that
"he" (Aliotta) "shows us in agnosticism all the new sources of the contemporary reaction; he shows us that its development goes through German (Riehl) and French (Renouvier) neocriticism, through the empirio-criticism of Mach and Avenarius, through English neo-Hegelianism; he describes and exposes Bergson's and Schmitt's intuitionism, Anglo-American pragmatism of W. James, Dewey, and Schiller, the philosophy of values and historicism of Rickert, Croce, Münsterberg, and Royce," etc. (p. 645) and so on up to Schuppe, Cohen, and others.
In the second part, the author examines Ostwald's energetics and Duhem's "new physics of qualities"* and the "theory of models" of Hertz, Maxwell, and Pastore. The author particularly hates mysticism (including Bergson's) and so on.
The author's viewpoint is said to be "the spirit of the golden mean of true rational intellectualism, - the spirit of Mr. Aliotta and Mr. Chiapelli" (p. 645).
