TO THE EDITORIAL OFFICE OF “TRUTH OF LABOR” *
[Not later than September 30, 1913! Poroshch.]
P.S. I have not yet received No. 5 of “Truth of Labor.” I am extremely grateful for the dispatch of the New Workers’ Gazette: it is only lacking Nos. 7 and 27 of that publication, as well as Nos. 7 and 9 of Our Path. Please send them to me.
It seems to me that you are making a colossal mistake by drifting aimlessly with the current and failing to change the editorial line of your newspaper. Everything points to the fact that we must alter both the tone and the substance of this section.
* The letter serves as a postscript to an unidentified article by Lenin, from which he was cut off. In the upper right corner of the manuscript, a signature attached to the article bears the note: “M.8 (better without a signature).” Ed.

chronicles. We must strive for legality—and for censorship—legality, indeed, is something we can and should attain. Otherwise, you are wasting the very cause you have undertaken. Consider this more seriously.
1 The date is determined by the content: 1) the letter was sent before the closure of “Truth of Labor” on October 14 (1), 1913; 2) reference is made to No. 5 of “Truth of Labor,” dated September 28 (15).
2 M. is Lenin’s literary pseudonym. It remains unclear which article is being referred to. Under the signature M. (the author has not been identified), there appears one article titled “The Significance of the Campaign Against the Press,” published in “For Truth” No. 31, November 22 (9). Following this, three articles by Lenin appeared in the same newspaper without a signature: “The Liberal Bourgeoisie and the Liquidators,” No. 20, November 8 (October 26); “A Statement,” No. 13, October 31 (October 18); and “Materials on the Question of Struggle Within the Social-Democratic Duma Faction,” No. 22, November 11 (October 29), 1913. (Collected Works, Vol. XVII, pp. 37–39, 27–28, 43–56.)
8 “Truth of Labor” was a daily newspaper published by the Bolsheviks, appearing in Petrograd from September 24 (11) to October 22 (9), 1913, replacing “Northern Truth,” which had been closed on September 20 (7). Only 19 issues were published in total. (Collected Works, Vol. XVII, p. 689, note 9.)
4 “Nos. 7 and 9 of ‘Our Path,’ dated September 14 (1) and September 17 (4), 1913, respectively (the latter issue featured Lenin’s article ‘Principled Questions of Politics,’ Collected Works, Vol. XVI, pp. 592–594).”
