To the Editorial Office of “Northern Truth.”
[End of August 1913
Poronin.]
Dear colleagues! Yesterday I sent to Prosveshchenie a lengthy article titled “How V. Zasulich Is Crushing Liquidationism.” Should “Northern Truth” still be in print, I propose that we publish this article

Letters from the Era of “Stars” and “Truth,” in six feuilletons—one chapter per feuilleton—while strictly preserving the manuscript and returning it immediately to
Prosveshchenie.
I repeat: without access to the newspapers, I am unable to work. Thousands of requests—and yet you still fail to send even one complete set of “Workers’ Truth”³ and “Living Life”³ to either “Northern Truth” or “New Workers’ Gazette”⁴. In the past, all of this was routinely arranged.
I simply do not understand why you continue to publish daily. I suggest switching to a weekly schedule. What is the daily loss? What is the circulation?
Best regards and warmest wishes—your Lenin.
The promised and long‑awaited fee from “Truth” has still not been received! This is beginning to look like nothing short of mockery!!
1 Justification for the date: Lenin’s reference to his failure to receive “New Workers’ Gazette,” which began publication on August 21 (August 8), 1913; the article “How V. Zasulich Is Crushing Liquidationism” was printed in No. 9 of “Prosveshchenie” for September (Works, XVI, 624–640).
8 “Truth” was closed on July 18 (July 5), 1913, and reappeared under the title “Workers’ Truth” on July 26 (July 13), remaining in print until August 14 (August 1). From August 14 (August 1), “Northern Truth” began publication, only to be closed in turn on September 20 (September 7), 1913 (Works, XVI, 748, note 179).
• “Living Life” was a legal daily newspaper published by the liquidators; it appeared in St. Petersburg after the closure of “Ray” (July 16 [July 3], 1913), with sixteen issues released throughout the month of July.
4 “New Workers’ Gazette” succeeded “Living Life,” appearing from August 21 (August 8), 1913, until January 23, 1914.
6 Lenin is referring to the persistent confiscation of “Truth” and its dire financial straits.
