P.S. If the lawyer had been any smarter, he would have come to Zurich for the funeral and spoken with Zetkin, Kautsky, and — what is strictly important — with members of the Vorstand.

¹ G. V. Plekhanov — an outstanding figure of Russian and international labor movement, the first propagandist of Marxism in Russia; after the II Congress of the RSDLP joined the Mensheviks. In years of reaction and a new revolutionary upsurge he spoke out against Machist revisionism of Marxism and liquidationism, led the faction of Menshevik-partisans. During the world imperialist war he shifted to the positions of social-chauvinism.

At the funeral of A. Bebel on August 17 (new style) 1913, G. V. Plekhanov, speaking on behalf of Russian social-democracy, said: "We are struck first of all by him, as a highly standing guardian of the unity of the German party.

Let him serve as an example for us in preparing the end of such lamentable disagreements among Russian party comrades."

² This refers to Stuttgart lawyer A. Kahn.

# DRAFT LETTER ON BEHALF OF LAWYER J. DUCO DE LA HAYE TO THE "DEPOSITORS"

[August 1913, before the 28th]

Comrade Zetkin and Comrade Kautsky, Dear comrades, Willon and I have been called upon as socialist lawyers regarding the money placed in safekeeping by Lenin (Ulyanov), and regarding the divergence of views that exists between you and him.

The conclusion is based principally on an exchange of correspondence and the question is posed first of all from the point of view of justice and politics.

I am asked to send this conclusion to you, which I hasten to do.

Since I am an active member of the party, I have been asked to act as intermediary and to ask you whether you would agree, in the event that unclear questions remain, to discuss and clarify them jointly.
