To the Editorial Office of “Pravda.”
A Response to the Editors.
[July, prior to the 24th, 1912*. Kraków.]
The liquidators of “Nevsky Golos” are going to great lengths to undermine the unity of workers’ electoral action in St. Petersburg. But they will not succeed. The hypocritical cries about “unity”… (coming from the liquidators!!) will deceive no one.
The unity of working‑class democracy is assured.
Workers will not follow those who seek to liquidate working‑class democracy and merely [pretend] to promise to replace it with an openly “party” of liberal labor politics. What conscious workers truly desire is the unity of the working masses—and not “agreement,” achieved at the expense of that very unity, with the intellectual, schismatic circles of liquidators. And “Raboty” must adhere to this slogan.
We will not be unsettled by the unworthy antics of the liquidators, who openly ask where one might “find” that which does not boast any “openness”... Go ahead, gentlemen, compose your own “open” platform; build your new, “open” party—farewell!
P.S. I earnestly request that you respond to me immediately—or as soon as possible—on the question raised here. Silence is unacceptable. To remain silent on this matter could ruin everything and provoke protest from the workers on the left. It is imperative to counter the liquidators.
One cannot conduct elections while concealing for whom this work is being done—not for the liquidators, surely! If you do not wish to exacerbate tensions and spoil everything “to the left,” then publish this “Response to the Liquidators.”2 In the event that it is not published, please return this sheet to me without delay. This is of vital importance to me!
1 Justification of the date: the stamp on the “Pravda” editorial office indicating the time of receipt of the letter reads “July 11, 1912,” according to the old style, i.e., July 24, New Style.
1 The note “Response to the Liquidators” never appeared in “Pravda.”
