[22 November 1911]

As a representative of the Bolshevik faction, recognized as one of the parties in the dispute concerning the money sent by me in June 1911 to the address of comrade Zetkin, I declare my exclusive right to this money held by Zetkin and, relying on this right, hereby give my consent to the payment of ten thousand francs (10,000 fr.) to comrade Nikolay (address: Mme. Gaidamovich, rue Val de Grace, 11 bis, Paris [for Nikolay]), for transfer to the treasury of the Russian Organizational Commission. In the event of payment of this sum, I hereby obligate myself to correspondingly reduce my claims against comrade Zetkin.

² In K. Kautsky's letter to V. I. Lenin of 2 October (new style) 1911, it was reported that F. Mehring had refused to perform the duties of "holder" of the Bolshevik money due to illness, as a result of which the "holders" could not reach a decision in case of disagreement of opinion. Kautsky promised to reach an agreement with K. Zetkin and F. Mehring concerning future relations.

³ In his letter of 18 October (new style) 1911, K. Kautsky informed V. I. Lenin that after F. Mehring's refusal to perform the duties of "holder," he had no mutual understanding with K. Zetkin concerning the monetary sums entrusted to them for safekeeping, and all efforts to achieve unity of views on this matter were unsuccessful. He refused to perform the duties of "holder" and requested that henceforth the question be addressed only to K. Zetkin.

⁴ See the present collection, p. 49, footnote 1.

In her letter of 18 November (new style) 1911 to the "Foreign Bureau of Russian Social-Democracy," published in February 1912 in the "Leaflet of the Voice of the Social-Democrat" No. 3, K. Zetkin and K. Kautsky reported the refusal of all three "holders" from their duties and their decision concerning the money entrusted to them. Rejecting the legitimate demands of the Bolsheviks for the return of money belonging to them, Zetkin and Kautsky asserted that the question of who the money belongs to remains disputed and the money could be released only on the basis of a joint decision of both sides: on one hand the Bolsheviks, on the other the representatives of all factions that participated in the January Plenum of the Central Committee of the RSDLP in 1910. They made known that, until such an agreement was reached, the money remained in the bank into which the "holders" had placed it.
