STATEMENT TO THE SECRETARY OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF “SOCIAL DEMOCRAT.”
To Comrade Secretary of the Editorial Board, C.O.1.
November 4, 1909. Paris*.
Dear Comrade! I request that in the next issue you publish
C.O.’s resolution, which was rejected by a vote of two against two
with one abstention **, along with my declaration of resignation from the editorial board of C.O., and also [issue] and send me copies of my resolution, the March resolution, and the adopted resolution, complete with the voting results.
With fraternal greetings,
N. Lenin.
P.S. I would also ask the editorial board of C.O. to inform me whether
it intends to include, for the next issue of C.O., my polemical article
on the question of methods for strengthening our Party and its unity.
1 This statement was prompted by the following conflict that arose within the editorial board of “Social Democrat.” In light of the growing rapprochement between Bolsheviks and Mensheviks—Party members (Plekhanovites)—in 1909, as the struggle for the illegal party intensified and practical work unfolded, Lenin proposed to the editorial board of “Social Democrat” on November 2 or 3, 1909, an article entitled “On the Methods of Strengthening Our Party and Its Unity” (this article has not yet been located). By a majority vote, the editorial board rejected the article as a piece intended for publication under the editor’s authority, suggesting instead that it be published under the author’s own name. At that point, Lenin brought before the editorial board the broader question of strengthening the Party and its unity, presenting his draft resolution on this matter (see Collected Works, Vol. XIV, p. 180). At that time, the editorial board consisted of: Lenin, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Martov, Varsky. Lenin and Kamenev voted in favor of the resolution; Martov and Varsky voted against it; Zinoviev, who had previously voted against the adoption of a political resolution, abstained. In light of the rejection of both the article and the resolution, Lenin submitted the present statement announcing his withdrawal from the editorial board of “Social Democrat.”
