I.

170 This refers to the composition of the Central Committee of the party, elected at the Fifth (London) Congress of the RSDLP, consisting of 12 persons. By the "Five" is meant the narrowed composition of the CC of five persons working in Russia. Lenin's ironic remark about the Five in "angelic rank" refers, probably, to a draft resolution of the Menshevik-Liquidators, in which they proposed to abolish the Foreign Bureau of the CC, concentrating all guidance of party work in the hands of the Russian Five.
