TWO LETTERS OF LENIN
FROM 1907
•2Ш5В. V. I. LENIN – A. M. GORKY
ON CAPRI ISLAND (ITALY).
Wednesday, 14.VIII.07.
Dear Alexei Maximovich! We arrived here today with
Meshkovsky and tomorrow we are going to Stuttgart.1 It would be very, very important
if you were there too.2 Firstly, you would be officially
inducted through the Central Committee (with consultative vote). Secondly, it would be very good to
see each other, otherwise we may not see each other for a long time. Thirdly, it's only about a day's journey from you and it will
last no more than a week (this is not London!). It will not be at all
late if you leave on Sunday or even Monday.
In a word, everything is in favor of your arrival. If only you are healthy,
please do come. Don't miss the chance to watch the work of international socialists - it's not at all, not at all
the same as general acquaintance and chattering.
The next congress is only in three years. And about our
various affairs we will never properly correspond, unless we
see each other. In a word, be sure to come. Goodbye!
Big greetings to Maria Fedorovna.*
Your N. Lenin

1 Lenin and Meshkovsky (U. P. Goldenberg) were delegated to the
international congress in Stuttgart (the 7th congress of the Second International)
by the decision of the Central Committee of (*29) July 16, 1907.
The letter was apparently written on the road.
2 A. M. Gorky was not at the Stuttgart Congress.

TWO LETTERS OF LENIN FROM 1907

V. I. LENIN – M. S. KEDROV
TO PETERSBURG.1
[Beginning of December 1907. Finland.]*
Dear Comrade! According to our agreement, the material for the 2nd volume should be submitted by 1/X, for the third - by 10/X.*
The first volume was delayed. I have submitted 12 sheets for the 2nd, further
7 are ready, and further (about 5 or 7) I can submit very soon.
But I would like to know, do you really need all this material
so quickly? Will you immediately begin typesetting? Have you submitted
the 12 sheets of the 2nd volume for typesetting? Will the publication be delayed
if I submit the end of the 2nd volume later? If so, I can submit
the end of the 2nd volume immediately if you want. But
I have a plan: to write in conclusion to the 2nd volume a large
work on the distribution of land in Russia (according to new
statistical data, 1905) and on municipalization (taking into
account the 4th volume of Capital or Theorien iiber den Mehrwert,** also published
in 1905). I think this thing would be of great interest to the public and would be very timely. The materials for
the work are almost all already selected by me and partly already
processed. It will take several weeks to finish; I hope that
I will be able to write this work in a few weeks.
So, tell me: do you want the submission of the 2nd volume
immediately without this new article - or do you prefer that
the 2nd volume be submitted in about a month - 1/2 with a new
article.
1 The basis for the date is the mention of the delay in the publication of the 1st
volume of Lenin's articles "For 12 Years", which, according to the agreement (see note 2
below) should have been published no later than (23) November 10, 1907, and (16) 3
December had already been arrested.
2 The discussion concerns the conditions for publishing Lenin's works. The contract for the publication
of Lenin's articles in 3 volumes was signed (24) August 11, 1907, on one
side by proxy for Lenin, L. Rosenfeld-Kamenev, and on the other side
