OPEN LETTER TO THE EDITORS OF "LEIPZIGER VOLKSZEITUNG"

Volkszeitung" of June 15, 1905. Kautsky's article in translation
was fully reprinted in No. 102 of "Iskra" of June 28 (15),
1905. Lenin's response to Kautsky in the "Leipziger Volkszeitung"
was not published. In a letter to the Central Committee of July 12 (June 29), Lenin
wrote about this article by Kautsky: "Kautsky has placed
an excellent article about the German edition of "Izvestia""
(Works, Vol. VIII, p. 7). The polemic with Kautsky's article is partly dedicated to
the chapter: "Dare We Win?" in the pamphlet "Two Tactics
of Social Democracy in the Democratic Revolution" (p. 40).

OFFENER BRIEF AN DIE REDAKTION DER LEIPZIGER
VOLKSZEITUNG.
[June, after 15, 1905. Geneva.]
Werte Genossen!
S.-D. A.-P. Russlands) vielleicht jetzt schon ihre Gültigkeit selbst
für diejenigen, die sie fassten verloren haben». Einigungsverhand-
* Jn der L(eipziger) V(olks)z(eitung) — Druckfehler: «hassten».

A.-P. R. enthält und die im Münchener Partei
verlag der S.-D. A.-P.
A.-P. R. als «Attacken Lenins und seiner Freunde gegen Plechanow
und dessen Freunde». Drei kleine Bemerkungen dazu.
Was würde
Parteigenossen! Betrachten sie wirklich die S.-D. A.-P. Russlands
zialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei Russlands.

OPEN LETTER TO THE EDITORS
"LEIPZIGER VOLKSZEITUNG"

A.-P. Russlands als besondere Beilage.
[Translation.]
OPEN LETTER TO THE EDITORS OF "LEIPZIGER VOLKS-
ZEITUNG."
Dear Comrades!
In No. 135 of "Leipziger Volkszeitung," Comrade K. Kautsky writes
about the split in Russian Social Democracy. We must ask
you to print our response to Kautsky's attacks, and also allow
us to correct the factual inaccuracies in the mentioned article. We will be as brief as possible.
Kautsky says:
"The German edition of the resolution of the just completed Russian Congress appeared at a highly
inopportune moment; the resolutions will give most readers
a completely false idea of the relations in Russian
Social Democracy." Kautsky goes so far as to suggest that German comrades not distribute these resolutions.
We would like to object to this by saying that nothing can
give German comrades such a correct picture of the relations
in Russian Social Democracy as the authentic resolutions
of the Third Congress of the R.S.D.L.P., as well as the resolutions of the "conference"
organized by the New-Iskrists.
We resolutely declare that Kautsky makes a big mistake when he writes about things that he knows only at best
by hearsay, and that his picture of the relations existing in
Russian Social Democracy is very incorrect. For example, it becomes simply ridiculous when Kautsky expresses
the assumption that "the resolutions of the 3rd Congress of the R.S.D.L.P. may
have lost their meaning at the present moment even for the very people who authored * these resolutions.
Negotiations on unification between us and the New-Iskrists
are being conducted quite a lot now and have been conducted over
the last 2-3 months, but so far the result of these negotiations
is zero.
* In "Leipziger Volkszeitung" typo: instead of "who were the authors," - "who hated."

We strongly protest against the attempt to stifle our voice in the German Social Democratic press by such a crude, mechanical,
unprecedented measure as boycotting a pamphlet that contains only a translation of the resolutions of the 3rd Congress of the R.S.D.L.P. and which
appeared in the publication of the Munich party publishing house
of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (G. Birk & Co.). Kautsky has no right to speak
of his impartiality. He has always been partial in the present struggle within Russian Social Democracy. He had
every right to do so, of course. But one who is biased had better
not talk too much about impartiality, lest he be accused of hypocrisy.
Kautsky portrays all the resolutions of the 3rd Congress of the R.S.D.L.P. as
"attacks by Lenin and his friends against Plekhanov and his friends."
Three small remarks on this. Firstly, of the 17 resolutions,
only four directly or indirectly affect our opponents within the R.S.D.L.P. Secondly, Plekhanov has now left
the editorial board of Iskra. See No. 101 of Iskra. This shows how
little Kautsky knows about our relations. Thirdly, we ask
the German comrades to think about what impression it should make on Russian Social Democrats when a man
with the authority of Comrade Kautsky tries to undermine the work
of the entire party congress with such a "depiction": "Attacks
by Lenin and his friends"? What would they think in Germany of people
who would allow themselves (without reading the protocols) to portray
the discussions at the Dresden party congress like this: Attacks
by Kautsky and his friends...?
One word of warning to all German Social Democrats:
Comrades! If you really consider the R.S.D.L.P.
a fraternal party, then do not believe a single word of what
so-called impartial Germans told you about our split.
Demand only documents, authentic documents.
And do not forget: prejudice is further from the truth than ignorance.
With social democratic greetings, The Editors of the Central Organ ("The Proletarian") of the Russian
Social Democratic Party.
P. S. The French socialists understand something different by impartiality than the Germans. Their central organ "Le Socialiste" has just released as a special supplement a translation of the resolutions of the Third Congress of the RSDLP.
