Social Democracy has never regarded and does not regard war from a sentimental point of view. While unconditionally condemning wars as bestial methods of settling disputes among humanity, Social Democracy knows that wars are inevitable as long as society is divided into classes, as long as the exploitation of man by man exists. And to destroy this exploitation we cannot avoid war, a war which is always and everywhere begun by the exploiting, ruling and oppressing classes themselves. There is war and war. There is war — an adventure that serves the interests of a dynasty, the appetites of a robber band, the aims of the heroes of capitalist profit. There is war — and this is the only legitimate war in capitalist society — against the oppressors and enslavers of the people. Only utopians or philistines can condemn such a war in principle. Only bourgeois traitors to freedom can now in Russia stand aside from this war, [the war for freedom,] the war for the people's will. The proletariat has begun this great liberating war in Russia; it will be able to continue it, forming its own detachments of the revolutionary army, reinforcing the detachments of soldiers and sailors who have come over to us, drawing in the peasants, and replenishing the new citizens of Russia, who are being formed and tempered in the fire of civil war, with the heroism and enthusiasm of fighters for the freedom and happiness of all humanity.
