The conservative European bourgeoisie, assessing the latest events in Russia, sometimes makes extremely valuable admissions. Here, for example, is a highly instructive letter from the special St. Petersburg correspondent of the newspaper *Le Temps* dated November 5 (October 23). It is entitled: "Constitutionalists and Socialists." The author begins by pointing out how difficult it is during a political storm to clearly discern the position and action of various forces. However, something is already becoming clear:

"One circumstance stands out clearly. This is the purely socialist character of the agitation which preceded the granting of the Manifesto (October 17) and which followed the Manifesto. Red banners, the singing of the Marseillaise, revolutionary speeches — we have seen and heard nothing else. It is true that the people have won a great constitutional victory, but... (this remarkable 'but'!)... but they owe this victory to the entry onto the arena and the deployment of socialist forces. The railway strike and the general stoppage of economic life did more for victory in one week than all the six months' efforts of the Moscow constitutional party."
