*In No. 181 of "Rus" of 20(7) August the manifesto of 19(6) August on the State Duma, the statute on the State Duma and the schedule of the number of members of the State Duma by gubernias, oblasts and cities were published. From this Lenin takes all the data for numerical calculations on electors. In the same issue of "Rus" an unsigned article "On a New Path" was printed. Lenin's excerpts refer to the following two paragraphs of this article: a) "We are prepared to say that such a boycott would be, above all, a boycott against the peasants and against ourselves. After all, Russia will by no means share the hastily expressed opinion of the new Moscow Governor-General Durnovo, that constructive work is already finished and there is essentially nothing more to discuss" and b) "...we can only repeat the very weighty arguments of the 'Vestnik Evropy' that the awareness of the imperfections of the electoral system is compatible with work in a representative assembly elected on the basis of this system... Indeed, one can find as many proofs of this as one likes in West European history. The journal incidentally recalls how under Louis-Philippe Garnier-Pagès the elder and Ledru-Rollin, convinced adherents of universal suffrage, sat, and with great benefit, in a chamber created from large taxpayers."

# TOWARDS A BIOGRAPHY OF STEPHAN BORN

* TOWARDS A BIOGRAPHY OF STEPHAN BORN

AUGUST, AFTER THE 26TH, 1905. GENEVA.

In the first edition of the pamphlet "Two Tactics of Social Democracy in the Democratic Revolution" Lenin made a mistake.
He took Born's real surname — Buttermilch — for a pseudonym. B. Koltsov devoted an entire feuilleton to this insignificant mistake in
"Iskra" of 26(13) August under the heading "How Lenin Deepened Engels". In the 1908 edition of the pamphlet (Works, Vol. F ///, p. 426) Lenin noted his mistake
and ridiculed Koltsov. Obviously, in connection with this incident,
Lenin collected a significant part of the biographical information about Born available in the literature. The documents printed below, b,
c and d contain biographical notes on Born, and the appendix —
extracts from a letter from O. G. Lifshitz from Berlin, signed by her.
Gnedich — concerns, among other things, the same question.
