NOTES DURING THE SPEECH BY Y. O. MARTOV

* NOTES DURING THE SPEECH BY
Y. O. MARTOV.
1) Together with the speaker I consider some questions as having historical interest.
2) I "placed myself outside the party"... It is incorrect that the Soviet refused to convene a congress |T| 4 III - 6 III. We did not officially know that
it wants a congress.]71
— "To recognize as placed outside the party" = to exclude.
"They dare not." These words are not frightening, but ridiculous. —
3) Representation at the congress. 46 — Voronezh —

"Step over through

Throw out the points of the charter, which are intentionally
invented, so that to hinder unification."
The speaker took our decisions as a basis...
"Misunderstanding of Marxist views"...
"Elementary truths, they say, are precisely despised by opportunists." [Millerand — about the class struggle.] "Criticism" from the Agrarian Question of Kautsky.

"Insurrection is not a technical question, but a social-political question."

"Not a Marxist, but a Blanquist"...
"Agitation," etc. has no relation to the insurrection11).
Technically, mechanically, arithmetically.
"A radical revision of all our activity"...
"Revolutionary clubs"*12).
Resolutions about open speech contradict the Charter.
It might not be bad if the 3rd congress were about an 8-hour [working] day. (It was in the Iskra as well.)
Agrarian question.
Peasant committees are in Our Life
Peasant committees understood in a narrow sense opposed to
the speaker's understanding.
"Broad meaning."
Provisional government. "Equate"13) is necessary. [I disagree with the speaker.]
"Fetishization of the idea of the Provisional Government."
"Unleashing the revolution" = not to allow to stop = "probably
they say, everyone understands" = the process of revolutionizing.
"Too adventurous a step not to hinder the proletariat's development of the revolutionary process"...14)
The comparison with Millerandism remains in effect, У Parvus [only] a utopia15). У Vpered — participation
<in an alliance with a revolutionary-bourgeois <) [element of autocracy]. (Even more distrust of the minority...).

From Vpered it follows that it is possible to be in the minority in the government.

It would be good if we added what to demand from the bourgeois Provisional Government.

Their resolution is vague and obscure — unwillingness under any circumstances.

2) Coup d’etat - state coup. Lenin
has in mind his disagreement with the delegate Kamsky (Obukhov), who said that the proposal to give a decisive vote to the committee of foreign organizations and
parallel groups is, both in essence and in form, a coup d’etat.
(Protocols, pp. 101 and 105.)
3)
Lenin has in mind Plekhanov's article "On the Question of the Seizure of Power." ("Iskra" No. 96.) (G. V. Plekhanov. Works, vol. XIII, p. 203.)
4) Lenin has in mind the speech of Maksimov (Bogdanov).
5) By a resolution of the congress, the question of the relationship between workers and intellectuals in social-democratic organizations was postponed until the adoption of the party charter, and the floor was given to Maksimov (Bogdanov) for
the next report.
6) The Voronezh delegate - Filippov (Rumyantsev) - introduced a resolution that was very restrained
in relation to the new-Iskraites.
A conciliator - Mikhailov (Vadim - Postolovsky) said: "Do not refuse to win working-class organizations and to win back influence from the Mensheviks." Lenin's exclamation
after these words: "Long live the conciliators." (Protocols, p. 408.)
7) The delegate from Samara, Kramolnikov, proposed to issue a general resolution on the Socialist-Revolutionaries and liberals.
8) In connection with the arrival at the congress of the conciliators from the Central Committee, Nikitich
(Krasin) and Mark (Lyubimov), Lenin said: "There is more joy over one
sinner who repents than over 99 righteous ones."
9) What is meant is the resolutions: 1) on the recognition of the merits of "Vpered"
and 2) on the appointment of "Proletary" as the central organ.
10) Martov objected to the correctness of the representation at the congress,
disputing 12 votes.
11) Martov reacted with particular passion to that place in Lenin's report
where Vladimir Ilyich spoke about the inadmissibility in revolutionary
times of marking time and reducing all the tasks of politics to pedagogy.
Martov accused Lenin of forgetting the most basic elementary tasks,
tasks of propaganda and agitation.
12) Lenin asked how it was that the clubs among the Mensheviks were classified as
"unformed organizations."
13) In his report, Lenin criticized the Mensheviks, who equated the participation of Social Democracy in the Provisional Revolutionary Government to the participation of Millerand in the Waldeck-Rousseau ministry. Martov insists on
the legality of such an equation.
14) Martov put forward as one of the arguments against the participation of Social Democracy in the Provisional Revolutionary Government the danger that this step would
hinder the further "unleashing of the revolution."
15) What is meant is Parvus's slogan: "Without a Tsar, but a workers' government."
16) When issuing the resolution on the 3rd Congress, the Samara Committee put on record the special opinion of two members of the committee, where it was expressed the fear that, if the Iskra left the congress, the Bolsheviks might not be able to oppose the Iskra with their sufficiently authoritative
Central Organ. ("Vpered" No. 14, March 30, 1905. In the section "From the Party" R. S. to the resolution of the Samara Committee.)

RECORDS DURING THE SPEECH OF Y. O. MARTOV
17)
Criticizing the resolution of the Menshevik conference on the organizational question, Lenin approximately said the following: the Mensheviks' talk about unformed, broad, unauthorized organizations reminds me of a picture. In a mad whirl, Malyavin’s women are spinning around, skirts are billowing, the richness and motley of colors strike the eye, and the transition from one to another is completely arbitrary. Under this picture, one wants to write: not a dream, not unformed organizations.
Lenin probably had in mind Malyavin's painting “Laughter,” which was awarded at the Paris exhibition in 1900. Martov's objection to Lenin was approximately as follows: the organizational structures of the Bolsheviks at first glance are closer to classical painting than to decadent paintings. The proportionality of parts is observed, their paragraphs are so adjusted to each other, like arms and legs in wax figures in wax museums.
One trouble is, these wax figures are very much like corpses, there is no life in them. (Memoirs of Comrade Kramolnikov.)
18) In Lenin's article in No. 4 of "Iskra" "Where to Begin," it was said about the need to start building the party from all sides simultaneously.
19) Lenin emphasized in the report that the 3rd Congress gave statutory constitutional guarantees to the minority in the party. Martov, to refute this, quoted § 10 of the Statute adopted at the conference. (Appendix to the Protocols, p. 544, § 10 note).
20) Martov joked about the fact that previously, abroad was supposedly a synonym for squabbling for Lenin, but now Lenin himself, having become the responsible editor of a central body located abroad, will not particularly insist on the subordination of foreign writers to the Russian Central Committee.
