3/XII [1903. Geneva].

Dear Comrade! I forgot to inform [you] that I request all my articles be signed N. Lenin, and not "Contributor."

If the letter to the editorial [board]¹ or the agrarian article² are to be postponed, then I request that the "letter" be placed in No. 53 and the agrarian article be postponed.

With S.D. greetings, Lenin.

Among other episodes of the systematic campaign against the majority, against the C.C., against Lenin and his closest associates, undertaken by the opposition after it had seized control of the editorial board of the C.O., a prominent place is occupied by the fact of the forced resignation of N. K. Krupskaya from the position of secretary of the editorial board. The Martinovists, after being co-opted into the editorial board, could not reconcile themselves to the presence of N. K. Krupskaya in it as secretary of the editorial board. The first step of the new editorial board was a disguised attempt to remove N. K. Krupskaya from her position by raising before her the question of her further work in the editorial board. After the very first meeting of the new editorial board, N. K. Krupskaya received the following official letter from Martov: "27 XI [1903]. Comrade Sharko [N. K. Krupskaya]. Dear Comrade! Since 26 November, V. Zasulich, Axelrod, Starover, and I have entered the editorial board of *Iskra* by invitation of G. Plekhanov. In accordance with the resolution adopted today by the editorial board, I request that you inform me: do you intend to continue secretarial work at the editorial board? Materials arriving for the editorial board please be so kind as to send to the address of Plekhanov or Starover. L. Martov. I request the reply be addressed to: A. Potressoff, Rue de la Servette, 43 IV for Martov." (Archive of the Lenin Institute, document No. 1977.) But this attempt by the Martov editorial board to "nicely" drive out the former secretary did not succeed. N. K. Krupskaya replied to Martov's letter as follows: "Dear Comrades! In reply to the editorial board's inquiry, I inform [you]: for my part, I have nothing against the secretarial post. I enclose the materials herewith. I. Sharko." After this first failure, the new editorial board considered itself forced to adopt more decisive measures in order to force the secretary to resign. On 4 December, Martov announced to N. K. Krupskaya the appointment of an assistant for her, who was to manage, among other things, a special section of the editorial board's correspondence (that is, in other words, the factional correspondence of the opposition). To this announcement N. K. Krupskaya replied with the letter printed below to the editorial board of *Iskra* with a refusal of the position of secretary of the editorial board.
