One of two things: either *Sovremennoye Obozreniye* is a supplement to the journal *Zarya* — (as agreed) — and in that case it should appear no more frequently than *Zarya*, with full freedom to utilize material for *Iskra*. Or we sell our birthright for a mess of pottage and prove to be genasfuhrt* Judases, feeding us on fine words.

If we are destined and able to achieve genuine hegemony, it is exclusively through a political newspaper (reinforced by a scientific organ), and when we are told with outrageous impudence that the political section of our newspaper should not compete with the political undertaking of Messrs. the liberals, then our pitiful role is as clear as day.

I have taken a copy of this letter and am attaching it to the “Protocol” of today’s meeting as a statement of my protest and my “dissenting opinion”, and I invite you also to raise the banner of rebellion. Better a split than this virtual subordination to the programme of *Credo* alongside loud phrases against Credo-ism.

If the majority votes in favour, I will of course submit, but only after first washing my hands of it.
