STATISTICS OF PRODUCTION SUBJECT TO EXCISE DUTY, AND STAMP DUTIES FOR 1897–1898. – ST. PETERSBURG 1900

In determining the number of workers engaged in migratory trades in 1897 and 1898, Lenin uses data from the collection: “Statistics of Production Subject to Excise Duty, etc.” These data are included in the second edition of “The Development of Capitalism in Russia” (Works, Vol. III, p. 446).

On p. 557 of this collection, Lenin records the result of his own calculation of issued passports and tickets:

Ergo, in the 50 gubernias of European Russia 9,495,699 – 91,842 = 9,403,857 – 70,662 = 9,333,195.

Lenin subtracts the totals for Poland and Siberia from the overall total for Russia.

The number of passports and tickets issued in 1898 in European Russia is calculated by Lenin on p. 564:

Ergo, in the 50 gubernias of European Russia: 8,259,944 – 412,147 (Caucasus, Siberia and Central Asia) = 7,847,797 – 38,207 (Ciscaucasia, Stavropol, Terek, Kuban) = 7,809,590.
