24/XII 00 [Munich].
Dear P. B.!
Only yesterday I returned from a trip on business *) and received your letter.
The newspaper should be ready today 2): upon receipt I will send it to you, if you do not move yourself.
My brother [Potresov] is arriving this evening.
Alexei [Martov] 3) will not be free from his obstacles and move until 20 XII O.S. at the earliest.
I couldn't send proofs in any way,— I couldn't even get them myself and had to go to fit something in for page 8.
However unpleasant it was, I had to divide your article 4) and postpone the 2nd half to the [next] issue: otherwise, the necessary stuff wouldn’t fit due to the typesetting (for technical] reasons) in bourgeois 5), and not in petit.
So from Vasilyev 6) — ?, and from Adler 7) — nothing? You don't write about Adler.
The journal is moving forward: Georgy Valentinovich Plekhanov] sent an article about Struve 8) — a total of 6 articles have been sent.
I shake your hand firmly and wish you from the bottom of my heart to get rid of the influenza as soon as possible, which is raging so fiercely everywhere this year.
Your Petroff.
P. S. I have just read in G[urevich's] 9) letter that you have received an article about Austria.
That’s excellent.
Do you have a fully good translator?
If not, send the article here, we will translate it here.
V. I. LENIN — P. B. AXELROD.

P. B. AXELROD.

To Gurevich.
Thank you for the news.
Details about the Riga comrade are, of course, desirable to have: what kind of work would he like and could he take? How free and financially secure is he? and so on.
Please convey to Skubik' 10) that I have received his letter, did not reply because I was not at home,— and now I can only say that o u r man is a l r e a d y «there» 10), and has the address, so the matter about which Skubik and I corresponded, is exhausted.
I shake your hand firmly. Petrov.

1) A trip to Leipzig, where *Iskra* was printed; see letter 22, note 3.
2) With these words, Vladimir Ilyich establishes for the first time the exact date of publication of «No. 1 of «Iskra*» — 24/XII 1900. Axelrod went to Munich only at the beginning of January 1901 and stayed there for about a month and a half — until mid-February.
3) Yu. O. Martov left Russia much later than Vladimir Ilyich expected, namely at the beginning of spring; in February he was still in Russia, and at the end of March he was already in Munich (see «Letters of P. V. Axelrod and Yu. O. Martov», pp. 25, notes 1 and 2).
4) Axelrod's article "Results of International Social Democracy" in issues 1 and 2 of *Iskra*.
5) Bourgeois and petit are special types of fonts.
6) Nikolai Vasilyevich Vasilyev - doctor, a Populist of the 70s, then a participant in the Swiss Social Democratic movement. After 1905 he returned to Russia, worked in cooperation, was a Menshevik, a Plekhanovite, and participated in Plekhanov’s “Unity” group in 1917. Died in 1919 or 1920. Axelrod was counting on his collaboration in Iskra. Printed a note in «No. 4 of *Iskra*» about the celebration of May Day in Arbon (see «Letters of P. B. Axelrod and Yu. O. Martov», p. 32, note 16).
7) See letter 21, note 5.
8) G. V. Plekhanov’s article for the first issue of *Zarya*: “Criticism of Our Critics. Mr. Struve as a Critic of Marx’s Theory of Social Development." Article one.
9) Gurevich, Abram Grigoryevich—see letter 17, note 6.
10) About Skubik and the transport of *Iskra*, see letter 17, note 5.
It has not been possible to establish which comrade from Riga Vladimir Ilyich is talking about.
«There» — in Russia, where the agent for the transport of *Iskra* to Russia went.
