TO P. B. AXELROD

October 19

Dear P. B., A short P.S. to yesterday’s letter, so as not to make
you answer questions which have turned out to be erledigt . [1]

We have just received the Parisians’ letters, and at once
understood what I wrote to you yesterday that I had not
quite understood [2]

:

namely, your warning to be “wise as serpents” (easier said than done!) and to keep away from
the “émigrés”. The tone of the letters is such that it serves
as an excellent commentary on your remark, which is now
quite clear to me.

Yours, Petrov
