Lenin received this Composite Collection while in exile, after the greater part of his book *The Development of Capitalism in Russia* had been sent to print. Lenin refers to this collection in the paragraph "The Growth of Factory and Trade-Industrial Settlements and Villages," in Chapter VIII of his book (Works, vol. III, pp. 442–446). The data from Table XXX used by him are specially marked by Lenin in the collection. Lenin also reviewed other sections of the collection. Thus, on p. 607 he makes notations on Table XXXIX concerning changes in peasant households over a 10-year period: with a minus sign (—) he marks the column showing households that had deteriorated, with a plus sign (+) he marks the column showing households that had improved, and the column showing households that remained unchanged is marked with an equals sign (=).

On the basis of statistical information about households hiring themselves out as laborers and households with hired laborers (Table XXIV, p. 269), Lenin compiles a summary for 11 districts of Voronezh Province.

On the book's cover Lenin notes the pages where data of interest to him are presented.
