The present edition represents an exact reproduction of the first. Being entirely uninvolved in the composition of the text, we did not consider ourselves entitled to subject it to any alterations whatsoever and confined ourselves solely to editorial work. The motive that impelled us to undertake this work was the conviction that the proposed work would serve to revive, to some extent, our social-democratic propaganda.

Holding that readiness to serve the cause of this propaganda must be an essential consequence of social-democratic convictions, we appeal to all those who share the views of the author of the proposed pamphlet with the proposal to contribute by every means available (particularly, of course, through reprinting) to the widest possible dissemination both of the proposed work itself and of all organs of Marxist propaganda in general. The present moment is especially favorable for such contribution. The activity of *Russkoe Bogatstvo* is assuming an increasingly provocative character toward us. In its endeavor to paralyze the spread of social-democratic ideas in society, the journal has resorted to direct accusations against us of indifference to the interests of the proletariat and insistence on the ruin of the masses. We dare to think that by such methods the journal only harms itself and prepares our victory. However, one must not forget that the slanderers have at their disposal all the material means for the broadest propaganda of their slanders. Several thousand copies of the journal are at their command; reading rooms and libraries are at their service. Therefore, in order to prove to our enemies that even the advantages of a privileged position do not always guarantee the success of insinuations, we must exert all our efforts. We express complete confidence that these efforts will be forthcoming.
